Interested in coaching or volunteering?
The Curé of Ars Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) is seeking volunteers that are interested in fostering athletics for all school and parish youth in accordance with Christian Sportsmanship standards. As a member of the Johnson/Wyandotte County CYO, we manage, administer and encourage participation in several sports to Curé of Ars students and parishioners and are seeking volunteers to help with this purpose. We have various coordinator and coaching positions available to interested parents and parishioners. Please contact Kathleen Wynne at [email protected] if interested in learning more about these opportunities.

Basketball: Curé of Ars participates in two leagues for boys and girls, at the Grade School and the High School levels. Parishioners in grade and high school grades (4 – 12) are eligible to participate. The season takes place from October - March, with signups generally in late September and practices starting in late October.
Since there are generally multiple teams for each grade at the grade school level, formal evaluations are held for all participants in grades 5 – 8 and players are placed on teams based on their skill level. The fourth grade team is equally divided based on skill level. All players must be registered prior to their scheduled evaluation time. Players should plan on attending their scheduled evaluation as no make-up period is offered. Evaluations are organized and run by CYO and are not open for attendance.
Most practices are held at the Cure of Ars gym and are generally split between two teams. Practice days and times are scheduled based on coach’s availability. However, practices for lower grades are generally held in the hours directly following school, and older grades in the evenings. CYO will schedule gym time at nearby facilities should additional practice time be necessary.
The CYO season gets underway the beginning of December with a three-week prereason tournament. The preseason games are intended to help evaluate all teams in a competitive setting to place accordingly for regular season play. The regular season generally begins in January and end-of-season tournaments are held after a 6 – 8 game season.
Football: Curé of Ars participates in the CYO Football League, which partners with the Parochial League of Kansas City (KCMO Catholic schools). CYO Football Season generally kicks-off the first Saturday of September.
All parishioners in grades 4 – 8 are eligible to participate and registration covers the following equipment costs:
· Helmet
· Shoulder pads
· Game pants (built-in padding)
· Game (home and away) & practice jerseys
· Practice shirt
Participants are expected to supply their own mouth piece, black game socks and appropriate shoes (cleats). All equipment is thoroughly inspected each year and replaced when necessary. Generally, helmets are replaced every three years and all helmets meet applicable safety certifications. Parents are encouraged to visit the CYO website for information on health and safety precautions (http://www.cyojwa.org/#!healthsafety/cn8t).
Team signups generally take place at the end of the prior school year for the fall sports, with late registration (for an increased fee) offered in August of the new school year. Notifications are distributed through the school and church bulletins.
Practice days, times and locations are determined by the individual grade football coaches and are communicated accordingly. They are typically held at locations within close proximity to the school, and start the beginning of August. Each players is required to attend the official “Weigh-Day”, which takes place before the first games.
Combined Teams: there are instances when Curé will partner with another local parish to field a team. This occurs when the minimum number of players (15) aren’t available. This is a common practice and Curé has fielded several teams in the past with another school. This partnership generally continues through the appropriate grade levels, and allows our students to meet and get to know students from other parishes.
Cross Country & Track: are offered in the Fall and Spring seasons respectively. Girls and boys in grades 3 – 8 are eligible to participate, with registrations taking place each March (track) and August (Cross Country).
Cross country distances are the following for each grade level:
· 3rd & 4th grade participants: approximately 800 meters (.5 miles)
· 5th & 6th grade boys and girls: approximately 1600 meters (1.0 miles)
· 7th & 8th grade boys and girls: approximately 2400 meters (1.5 miles)
Track offers three seasonal meets and one end-of-season “City” meet. Eligible races include sprint and distant running events, relays, and field events. Participants are allowed to select and enter up to four different events/meet. Participants must participate in at least two meets/season in order to be eligible to take part in the City meet.
Practice days, times and locations are determined by the coaches, but are usually held two evenings/week, split between boys and girls. Cure of Ars has partnered with nearby high schools to use their facilities for practices, including Shawnee Mission East & Shawnee Mission West. Saturday meets are also held at local high schools.
Volleyball: Girls in grades 3 – 8 are eligible to participate in volleyball. Registrations are held at the end of each school season (May) for participation in the following season (August). Seasons begin each fall at the onset of school, with evaluations and practices starting in August. Information is communicated via the school and church bulletins.

Uniform and Equipment Information:
Basketball: Uniforms consist of a single, reversible jersey and matching reversible shorts. The uniforms are distributed at the beginning of the season and returned at the end of the season. The cost of the uniform is included in the registration fee. However, it may be necessary to charge a fee if the uniform is not returned at the end of the season.
Football: Uniforms (home and away jerseys, practice jersey, and game pants) and equipment (pads and helmets) are provided for the athletes and returned to CYO each year. The cost of the uniforms and equipment is included in the registration fee. However, it may be necessary to charge a fee if the uniforms and equipment are not returned at the end of the season.
Track and Cross Country: The uniform consists of a uniform shirt and black shorts. CYO orders the shirt and delivers it prior to the beginning of the season. The cost of the shirt is included in the registration fee. The athlete is responsible for purchasing shorts. The athlete keeps the shirt but does not reuse it.
Volleyball: The uniform consists of a jersey and black shorts. The athletes order and pay separately for the jersey and are able to reuse it year-to-year. CYO orders the jersey and delivers it to the athlete prior to the beginning of the season (usually at a team practice). The athlete is responsible for purchasing shorts (Soffe brand is recommended but not required) and knee pads.
